In Maryland, nearly all employers have a legal duty to maintain insurance to ensure employees are compensated in cases of a work-related injury. The injury has to have occurred during the course of your employment.
It is important that if you suffer a work-related injury, you act quickly. You must notify your employer within 10 days of an injury, or the family of a person who died during the course of his/her employment must notify within 30 days of the death. If you fail to notify the employer, you could lose your opportunity to pursue the matter further.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a record of reported workplace injuries and their associated incidence rate. Their data illustrates that some of the common workplace injuries of 2019 included:
- Overexertion and bodily reaction (lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, bending, crawling, etc.)
- Struck by object/equipment
- Contact with object/equipment
- Falls, slips, trips
- Transportation incidents
- Exposure to harmful substances or environments
- Violence and other injuries by persons or animals
